CHAPTER SEVEN

As BERNARD drove up the narrow, winding road that led to the top of the hill above St Martin sur Mer, Julia could feel herself relaxing already. She leaned back, studying Bernard’s firm hands turning the steering-wheel as he negotiated one of the bends. A white sports car was coming towards them, a young couple laughing together as they passed within inches of their car, driving much too fast on that potentially dangerous section of the road.

Bernard eased off the accelerator just in time as he realised the other car was going to encroach on their side of the road. The blaring music from the young couple’s car became fainter as it disappeared down the hill.

He breathed a sigh of relief as he continued up to the top of the hill. ‘They wouldn’t drive with such abandon if they’d seen the damage that sort of driving can do.’

‘I was thinking exactly the same. Michel told me the multiple crash we assisted with was caused by a van driver using a mobile phone as he was overtaking a car. He lost control of his van, ploughed through the central barrier and vehicles piled up around him.’

‘Including our Pierre and his wife,’ Bernard said quietly. ‘I’m so relieved it was possible to save them. The result of good teamwork throughout the day—paramedics, nurses, doctors, everybody.’

He took a deep breath as the enormity of the events finally hit him now that he’d left hospital and was able to assess the situation.

His voice wavered with emotion when he spoke again. ‘Pierre and Monique had only been married a few months and that precious baby was a much-wanted child.’

Julia swallowed hard. ‘All babies are precious.’

Bernard could hear the gentle, emotional tone in her voice as she said this.

‘You love babies, don’t you?’

‘Yes, of course I do.’ She hesitated. ‘I’d love to have my own baby. But not until the right time,’ she added quickly. ‘I need to feel I’m in charge of my own life first.’

He eased the car over the brow of the hill. ‘Since you arrived I’ve sensed you’re becoming more and more in charge.’ He changed gear as the road flattened out. ‘But, Julia, you mustn’t be too inflexible. Who was it that said life is what happens when you’re making other plans?’

Julia thought for a few moments. ‘I don’t know who said it but it’s very true.’

They were sailing down the other side of the hill now, into the green, spring-awakened valley. She could feel the connection between them growing stronger by the minute.

She clenched her hands as the truth of everything that had happened since she’d met Bernard hit her. This was the sort of man she wanted in her life. She drew in her breath. This was the actual man she wanted in her life. But even as the realisation came to her she reminded herself that the timing wasn’t right.

She’d planned to make a fresh start. This was why she’d left the old life behind. She shouldn’t be thinking of veering off course.
